Who am I?

Incoming Assistant Professor of Physics at IISc, Bangalore.

My group will start from 01/2022. We will use theory and computation to probe cellular transport, cell signaling, and viral evolution. Watch this space for positions in our group.

I am Sumantra Sarkar. I am a scientist in the Theoretical Biophysics (T-6) group in Los Alamos National Laboratory. I have worked on the interface of Physics and Biology ever since I started doing research back in my undergraduate days at IIT Bombay. I am fascinated by the ingenious ways a cell manipulate the physical world around itself and the equally ingenious ways that scientists use to unravel these processes. I currently investigate the biophysics of cell-signaling systems. In particular, I am interested in using theory and computation to study cellular transport, signaling, and their impact on molecular evolution. I have made a few interesting discoveries that you can learn in detail in my research page. Also, here are a CV and a publication list. In my spare time, which are increasingly rarer these days, I like to take photographs of animals and landscapes.

My research

Cell-signaling
Cells process signals through an intricate dance of signaling proteins in space and time. Like a dance, the spatial movements of the proteins are strongly coupled with their temporal evolution. In this project, I investigate how the spatiotemporal organization of the signaling proteins influence the cell-signaling process.
